ושרי אשת אברם לא ילדה לו ולה שפחה מצרית ושמה הגר (Gen 16:1)

1. "the land of Canaan" also occurs in E (Gen 35:6) and J (Gen 44:8)

So, the originated of these verses whether P or J should be left open.
Van Seters argued that whtiout v. 1, with its mentino of Sarai's barrenness, the story loses its point. Therefore, it must be part of the origianl folktale used by J.
